Let's Talk About Seeds You Can Eat!

Did you know that you can eat all kinds of plant parts like stems and roots? Over the next few weeks, we will learn about different common fruits and vegetables that are different parts of the plant. Today we are going talk all about seeds that we eat!

What Exactly is a Seed?

Seeds are the part of the plant that is capable of developing into another plant. They are within the flowering part of the plant. 

An example of a seed we eat is a sunflower seeds. But we eat a lot of others too.

Can you think of any foods that you eat that are seeds?

Here's some common edible seeds:
  • Beans

  • Lentils

  • Peas

  • Rice

  • Cacao

  • Pecans

  • Almonds

  • Corn kernels 

Fun Facts About Seeds We Eat

  1. Seeds are a great source of fiber and antioxidants.
  2. Some seeds need light to germinate (which means grow) while others actually need darkness.
  3. The largest seed is the Coco de mer, pictured to the right. It can weigh more than 44 pounds!
